Top Japanese runners for BIM this weekend
KOTA KINABALU: Those participating in this weekend’s 8th Borneo International Marathon (BIM) will have a chance to run the same course as one of the world’s top professional runners from Japan. Kinabalu Running Club (KRC), the organizers of the BIM, has confirmed that IAAF world ranking athlete Asuza Nojiri will compete in the 42km women open category.
“We are very pleased that Japanese running clubs have interest in our race. Although running side-by-side with the runner is perhaps not possible for most of us, fans of long distance running will be able to witness her in full action,” President of KRC Dr Heng Aik Cheng said.

Asuza’s best ranking is 19th at the World Championships in Korea in 2011. Her best personal time of 2:24:57 was achieved in Osaka 2012. She will be accompanied by Yukiya Higuchi, Chief Editor of a popular Japanese running magazine. Higuchi, with a best time of 3:10:55, will compete in the marathon men’s veteran category.
Close to 8,000 participants registered for the event this Sunday. About 1,000 international participants and their supporters will arrive Kota Kinabalu starting this week. The top three highest number of international participation comes from Brunei, UK and China. Runners from more than 55 countries have joined this event since its first year, which started with a mere 530 runners in 2008, and have grown bigger year after year.
“We are extremely grateful to Sabah Tourism Board, the Ministry of Youth and Sports and private sectors including Gleneagles for their monetary contribution and sponsorship in kind. Funding received gives us a chance to give more to the runners and contribute to our beneficiaries,” Heng added.
More than 500 volunteers are expected to support this event from Befrienders, Cycling Association Kota Kinabalu, Red Crescent, Ministry of Health, Kota Kinabalu Boys’ & Girls’ Brigade Band, RELA, Scouts, Sabah Amateur Radio Society, Shangri-la Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa and Shangri-la Rasa Ria Resort, Universiti Malaysia Sabah and other individuals.
There are three distances in BIM, the marathon (42km), half-marathon (21km) and the 10km run. The event is held to tie-in with the Sabah Fest, a cultural showcase in Sabah on the Harvest Festival month.
Proceeds from BIM will go to seven charitable bodies namely Befrienders, Emmanuel Homes, Humana Child Aid Society, HUTAN, MERCY Malaysia, PEMADAM, and Seri Mengasih.
Runners can collect their race packs at the 6th floor Suria Sabah 30 April – 2 May between 10am – 6pm. Motorists are advised to visit www.borneomarathon.com and the BIM Facebook page for latest updates on the race and road closure details.
